| Bowenhurst narrowly beaten by York Road | |||
Bowenhurst were unfortunate to lose to York Road as both teams were evenly matched. A couple of missed chances and a Matthew Sharp own goal helped to give the home side the slight advantage. Bowenhurst kept with Martin in goal and David Watson returned to play in central defence. Louis Fidler also returned to play at left back. York road had the majority of the possession in the first half and took the lead following a free-kick on the edge of the Bowenhurst penalty area. The ball was played into the near post and bounced off the keeper's leg only to trickle along the goal line where the York striker smashed the ball home. York Road went further ahead when a cross into the Bowenhurst goal area was not cleared by either Matthew Sharp or Martin and the striker's header looped over the defence and into the goal. Paul Robertson had gone close for Bowenhurst - his great run was followed by a powerful shot that bounced back off the inside of the post. Paul was then tackled when attempting to put the rebound away. Bownhurst got back into the game with Robin Pearmain shooting low across the goalkeeper to score his second of the season. Chances on goal became limited for both teams towards the end of the game. The Bowenhurst defence cut out many through balls that were meant for the York strikers with an obligatory hoof back down field. York, however, went 3-1 ahead when Matthew Sharp put through his own net when trying to cut out a York cross. Martin adjusted well but could not get enough on the ball to stop it going in the net. James Buchanan made it 3-2 when he thumped home a ball that had found its way across the York Road penalty area. Although the linesman flagged for offside, James was clearly onside and the referee awarded the goal. Adam Deeley was awarded Man of the Match for his tireless performance in midfield. Although he didn't score, shoot (on target), pass or clear any shots off the goal line this week he still put in more effort than anyone else. | Trafalgar Inn put nine past Bowenhurst | |||
Bowenhurst succumbed to their second worst defeat of the season with a 9-1 thrashing by Trafalgar Inn. Bowenhurst even had a full squad of players to choose from but it was not enough as the Trafalgar team were able to run through our defence with ease. Bowenhurst did play some decent football and created a couple of chances - one effort cannoned back off the crossbar early on in the first half. But it was all too easy for the Trafalgar strikers as they carved through our defence every time they attacked. Martin had made some decent saves - diving at the strikers' feet - to keep some chances out but he could not stop Trafalgar as they went into a 3-0 half-time lead. The second half was no better and with the Bowenhurst goalkeeper often outnumbered it was easy for Trafalgar to take their goal tally to nine. Martin did make some saves - tipping a couple of one-on-ones round the post - and without him in goal the score could have been doubled. Bowenhurst scored their only goal in the last five minutes from the penalty spot. David Watson was pushed over in the penalty area and Stuart Lavin calmly stroked home the penalty. Team: Martin Cheverton, Louis Fidler, Robin Pearmain, Matthew Sharp (c) (Ian Vout), David Watson, Paul Quinn, Adam Deeley, Steve Ball (Mark Owen). James Buchanan (Tom Hooker), Stuart Lavin |
