Understrength Bow Get Stuffed Again |
| |
Once again Bowenhurst have turned up to play Follyhill with only a handful of players. For the two previous fixtures we only had nine players and this time we could only muster ten to start the game.
With an understrength side we were only going to be under pressure and would have to hope that the defence could hold out whilst Paul would use his pace up front as the lone striker.
It didn't take Follyhill long before they went in front. There was a hint of offside with their first goal but, seeing as we didn't have a linesman, we were unlikely to get the decision. Follyhill scored twice more before the break.
We tried to hold out for the second half to get a respectable scoreline but we could not stop Follyhill piling the pressure on our goal.
Although the defence fought hard and restricted Follyhill to long range shots, many of which were blocked or off target, they still put four more past us.
Paul, whose pace had caused Follyhill problems at the back, did get on the scoresheet for Bowenhurst with a tap in as the ball landed at his feet from a corner.
Next week is the Hampshire Cup and we need a decent team to turn up if we are to progress past the first round. Please.

Bowenhurst Bow Out Of Hampshire Cup |
| |
Bowenhurst have bowed out of the Hampshire Cup at the first hurdle after being beaten 6-2 by Wyvern.
Wyvern, who had travelled up from Gosport, did not scare us with their matching tracksuits, but they did appear to be a decent team - at least they had substitutes.
Bowenhurst fielded a stronger side than we had done for recent matches but we were still without our top striker and other integral players from attack.
Bowenhurst were soon two goals behind after a fortunate deflection off two Bow defenders and a speculative long range effort both found their way into our net.
However, we did not become despondant - we are used to going behind early - and soon battled our way back into the game. After an offside decision was not given for us, David Watson cleared the ball down the pitch where Paul Quinn picked it up, turned and put the ball under the keeper to halve our deficit.
The Wyvern attack was constantly threatening our goal but the many through balls and runs off the ball were picked up by the defensive partnership of Martin Cheverton and Matthew Sharp who nullified all further attempts at our goal.
In the second half we were still constantly under pressure and did go further behind after a Wyvern break down the left was headed beyond David - the Wyvern striker doing well to get to the ball first.
Again Bowenhurst clawed a goal back with Paul showing great skill and pace down the right. His shot across goal was saved but Tom Hooker was on hand to rifle the ball into the top right corner.
With twenty minutes to go Wyvern were able to kill off the game by scoring their final three goals. Their fourth was headed in from a near post corner after some loose marking. The fifth was miles offside but the linesman flagged late and the referee let the goal stand. And Wyvern's sixth goal was a well taken volley from the edge of the box after a defensive header from a corner fell short.
Bowenhurst did create a few chances at the other end and things may have been different if we could have gone ahead. But, yet again, the defence was under constant pressure and is probably rather unfortunate to have conceeded six goals - although that does appear to be our average.
This result is rather disappointing for us as we were looking forward to an away game somwhere on the coast and the inevitable night out that would accompany it. Oh well, there is always next season and we have the league and league cup to focus on now.

Deeley's Backpass Costs Us The Game |
| |
Bowenhurst's losing streak has continued as we went down 5-2 to an AFC Aldershot Rangers side who were second in the league prior to the game.
With the Bowenhurst defence under constant pressure from Rangers' quick strikeforce and the pressure from midfield it did not help when Adam Deeley's weak backpass to the keeper was picked up by the Rangers striker and put away into our goal.
OK, we were 4-1 down at the time and the pass may have been aimed at Matthew Sharp who ran away but we had started scoring and we were hoping for another of our spectacular comebacks. Alas, it was not to be.
It was the usual story as Bowenhurst went behind to an early goal - Rangers' striker getting on the end of a cross as the defence was caught cold. And it didn't take long before AFC went onto a 3-0 lead.
There was the usual panic in the Bowenhurst defence and Paul did well to survive a kick to the kidney and a knee to the back of the head in the space of two minutes, from the same player and supposedly on the same side as Paul.
After the break Paul was pushed up front to utilise his pace and it began to make a difference as he was able to get in behind the defence and had a few shots at goal.
Mark Owen scored our first goal to give us some hope. Latching onto a through-ball it looked as though the keeper had saved but the ball slipped away from him and Mark was able to smash the ball in from two yards.
AFC scored again before Deeley gave them the gift to score their fifth with his short backpass.
Paul Robertson got our second of the game with a ferocious shot that the keeper could not stop.
Next week Paul can stay up front as his pace can beat most defenders and he is deadly in front of goal. He should also not get kicked by his own teammates.

Bowenhurst's Worst Result. Ever. |
| |
Bowenhurst succumbed to their worst defeat of the season - probably for ever - as we were beaten 10-0 by York Road Reserves.
There's not much more that needs to be said apart from we need to tighten up at the back. And score more goals.
All the goals of the game were scored by York Road Reserves.
This result has now sent us to the bottom of the league.

Full Strength Bow Bounce Back With a Win |
| |
After our recent dismal performances, which have seen us slip to the bottom of the league, Bowenhurst were able to field a full strength side for the first time this season.
The quality that we do have in the team showed as we beat fellow strugglers Cove Manor Reserves 6-1.
The first half was fairly even and both teams' defences did well to keep the score at 0-0. The breakthrough for Bowenhurst came towards the end of the first half when Matthew Sharp ran onto his own pass, beat the keeper to the ball on the edge of the box before slotting the ball away. The Cove defence stopped to play offside but failed to pick Matthew up as he stormed through.
Bowenhurst's second came straight from the kick-off at the start of the second half. The ball was worked back to Chris Bavin with some neat passing and his long ball forward was picked up by Stuart Lavin who controlled well before slotting the ball away for his 50th goal for Bowenhurst.
Paul Robertson scored our third before Adam Deeley, who was outstanding in midfield, scored his first of two with a curling shot from the edge of the box.
Cove Manor scored their only goal of the game from the penalty spot after Adam Deeley was adjudged to have fouled the Cove striker in the penalty box. It was a great tackle and the penalty should not have been awarded.
Justice was meted out five minutes later when Mark Owen, who had replaced Paul, had his heels clipped in the Cove box and a penalty was awarded. Stuart calmly sent the keeper the wrong way and claimed our fifth goal and his 51st.
The best goal of the game was saved till last and came from a Bowenhurst free-kick deep into Cove's half. Stuart Lavin picked out Adam Deeley, who was unmarked at the back of the area, and his header from a tight angle looped over the keeper and into the far corner of the net.
This was a great result for us and we definitely benefited from a stronger midfield - something we have lacked in previous games. The pressure was taken off the defence and they were able to keep the Cove strikers at bay and both Adam Deeley and Ian Vout also got forward to help out the Bowenhurst strikers.
